ABSTRACT

The coming of the millennium is also a time for reflection about the past and for looking ahead to the future. A similar mood is associated with the end of a century, what was named fin de siecle thinking at the end of the previous century, but one supposes that the end of a millennium is much more momentous! So, combining these rather variegated intuitions, it may seem appropriate to reflect on the nuclear weapons at the end of the present millennium and try to look ahead to see whether they will continue to hang like the threat of doomsday over our heads.
