ABSTRACT

There has been a good deal of public debate on the use of 'spare' or 'discarded' embryos as a source of stem cells for research purposes. The justification was that such research might eventually help those who have suffered injuries and disease as a result of cellular damage. The moral problem is that this might not be enough by way of justification if embryos in vitro have (some) moral status. The editorial collective of the journal suggested that a special issue on bioethics would be useful, not only because of the public exposure of the stem cell debate in Australia, but because there were other issues of public interest in this area as well.
