ABSTRACT
The twentieth century, with its shining
modernism, was guided by a dark angel. That century
provided witness to more deaths and property damage
caused by warfare than all previous human history. The
twentieth century staged the two largest international
wars in history and ended with ‘over a hundred armed
conflicts on the scale of “war” raging in the last decade’
(Miller 2000, 374). Historian Eric Hobsbawm (1994)
summarised it as ‘the century of barbarism’.
